Clients wanting free samples before deciding on freelancer

I've noticed recently that buyers are often asking for free samples before they go ahead with a job. As an experienced designer I always attach samples of previous work anyway and I have my portfolio. Now as someone with over 20 years experience off PPH I tend to resent it being questioned that I can do the job and cannot 'come up with the goods'. Now I suspect that some freelancers do let down clients, indeed I have a present client who has experienced just that. Perhaps time may need to be taken to weed out freelancers who let down clients regularly because it may be that this is causing problems for us all. I cannot afford to work for free and neither can most of us but it seems that many clients expect us to give away freebies and it also encourages scammers too. Perhaps buyers need to know we too take a risk when we deal with them. I ended up out of pocket on another freelance site due to a scammer.
