Do PPH need to reform their policies and become more progressive to make more money?
In my opinion, there are 2 major issues which hold me back in using PPH.
1. The high rate they charge freelancers and
2. Their draconian policy of not allowing freelancers to communicate outside the workstation.
Of course, we all understand why PPH implement these policies i.e. to make more money and to protect their interests. However, they charge (in general) 20% of my income, this is a huge amount for a freelancer. I am aware that they offer 'incentives' of reduced percentages the more you earn from a buyer, but except for the highest earners in a specific field, it is very difficult to achieve. This begs the question though, why can other similar platforms charge me 10%? Obviously, this means that I have more or less abandoned PPH, (I only do work for clients who contact me directly through the PPH app now) and am reluctant to take on work for PPH buyers because of the high rate they charge and coupled with the time it takes to get paid (PPH say it is for security and legal reason, which isn't true exactly, it shouldn't take this long to get paid. Having said this, the upshot is that I prefer to work for other platforms which in effect means that PPH has lost money not made more by charging a high rate. Bear in mind that I used to be one of PPH's top earners.
When it comes to communicating with buyers/clients the system PPH provides is substandard, meaning very basic and video calls, are for some reason, complicated. Because of this, sometimes it can take me longer to prepare work and answers to clients. It is no wonder that Clients want to use other media e.g. Whattsapp, the difference in sophistication and user-friendliness is stark. If PPH upgraded its communication system less people would want to use outside systems. In the past I have lost work because I said no to a buyer who wanted to use whatsapp or email. I understand PPH's Policy, but give us something up to date, it is 2024, and the other platform I work for has an easy-to-use communication system and I rarely get asked to go outside the system. In some cases, if you tell the platform, they will allow you to work directly for the buyer.
So, therefore, with a rate of 10% and a vastly superior way of communicating with buyers, it is no wonder that I have drastically reduced my hours on PPH. And, I can get paid much quicker as well on that different platform (in some cases within 5 days from contract end to money in the bank)
Put in these terms PPH's policy does not seem to make sense, perhaps they think, everything is fine. Perhaps no one else has noticed, just me? PPH are always encouraging freelancers to do better, make more money, get more clients etc - I believe PPH should try herder too!
