Suggestion of New Payment Method - MPESA
Hi,
I suggest the addition of a new Payment Method called MPESA.
This is a mobile-based money transfer service. With this system you receive money direct into your mobile phone from the source (e.g. PPH). You then go to an ‘MPESA Kiosk’ and withdraw your money within minutes.
This system was originally started in Kenya and Tanzania but is rapidly spreading to other parts of the world such as Afghanistan, South Africa, India and in 2014 to Romania and in 2015 to Albania.
Here in Kenya, for instance, MPESA is operated by the leading mobile network operator, Safaricom Ltd.
Current Developments
This payment method has already been added by another freelance platform (Upwork) to cater to its Kenyan freelancers (as an initial program). I believe that other platforms will adopt this payment method in time.
The Cons
-The system is not universal since it will cater only to freelancers from countries that have adopted MPESA e.g. Kenya
The Pros
If you implement MPESA, you will definitely get more freelancers from countries with MPESA such as Kenya. This is because:
- It is very easy to withdraw money with MPESA. It involves going to an MPESA kiosk and withdrawing the money within minutes. MPESA enables payment of utilities (e.g. water, electricity, rent, loans, etc) for people in countries with MPESA such as Kenya
- You will get more freelancers from Kenya and other countries where MPESA (or its offshoot) is available.
- Withdrawal via this method (for freelancers where it’s applicable) is very cheap compared to other methods (usually 0.99$)
I there propose if you can look into this method and consider implementing this system. This will lead to increased business due to the added incentive for freelancers to join PPH.
Kind Regards,
Alfred.
