When sending a proposal for a custom job I add an extra line for VAT on top of the proposal amount, then the buyer if VAT registered can clearly see what they can claim back
The when invoicing in PPH the invoice is set for the total amount and the % tax filled in - the generated invoice will display the VAT separately
PPH don't charge service fees on the VAT

@Nick
I do the same with projects where I name the price, and I always write in the description that I'm charging VAT and how it breaks down. In a lot of projects the buyer sets the budget, and those are the ones that cause me the problems. Maybe I should just add 20% and go for it, but some of them are prepaid.

@Nick Yes, that's what I would do too.
Re. everything else - I was very annoyed when PPH changed the fee structure - but it forced me to look at other sites, and realise just how good I'd had it with PPH.
I've not found anywhere that is better on fees and worthwhile signing up for, given the time I've spent cultivating this account. I decided instead to add that extra fees to my proposals by charging clients more per hour and being transparent about why.
I've not yet had a client say no. And whilst I earn the same at that higher rate per hour as I would have before the fee change, after the 1st 500 I'm now earning more.
So what I thought was going to be a very difficult and stressful time, never came to pass. And I've never once thought this wasn't a smart move by PPH - they could afford to lose a lot of freelancers with this new model, and still earn more than they were. It made perfect business sense. And sadly, we all have to adapt if we want to survive. That's the choice we made being freelance.
