Has anyone felt a job was sketchy? Screened?

Has anyone went thru the hiring process as a freelancer and got accepted and the company that responds acts very sketchy, with few details, no website of company or information, etc. I'm skeptical because no real answers and it's like pulling teeth to get started, I respond and each answer takes like 5 minutes to respond. They are wanting me to download software, I'm very unsure.Are people/ companies screened in any way?
